Chapter fifteen

Three hours later, Seena turned to Captain Lath, “We are ready to test it, sir.”

He looked over from the view screen, “Okay, what will we see?”

Seena responded, “If I did this correctly, our sensors will look for a moving mass with zero energy emissions. It will show as bright, flashing orange with a vertical line through it. I needed to design an icon and that was the easiest one to do.”

“Then, turn it on.”

He peered intently at the view screen and then the 3D display. Seena touched her console keyboard.

There was no change in the displays.

Lath looked at them, “We are right at the edge of our threat sensor range, correct?”

“Yes sir.”

He stood up from his command couch and walked up to the 3D display sphere.

“Seena, slowly move us in to about three hundred thousand kliks.”

She tapped her keyboard and the Marmouth began a slow acceleration. Three hours later, the massive ship had moved in from five hundred thousand kliks to just over three hundred thousand. She slowed to a stop. In the 3D display they could see the drone and sitting twenty thousand kliks outside of the drone sat three bright orange blips with a vertical line – the same icon Seena had made.

Lath nodded, “Good work, all of you. Really good work. Seena, can you program your console to make some kind of alert for us if they move or if more ships come in?”

She shook her head, “That would take a lot of time and I don’t think it would be as accurate as having the shipboard AI constantly monitor this and send us an alert through the neural node.”

Lath just nodded.

Ambria cocked her head to one side, “Captain, I don’t understand why they are all on the other side of the drone.” She motioned with her hand at the triangular separation of the three ships behind the drone.

Lath thought through this, “If the ships new we were approaching from this direction but not exactly where, then they’d want to be out of our way since we can’t see them with our sensor suite. That’s the only thing I can think of.”

He looked at the time set on the view screen. It was almost 1700. Petral and Lothan stepped onto the Bridge followed by Netswayne.

He turned to look at them, “Welcome. Your choice today, we can meet here or in the common room.”

Petral looked at the 3D display showing the drone and the other three contacts. “Here please. I’m not familiar with that icon. What is that?”

Lath motioned to Seena and Ambria to explain. Ambria started, “We were able to turn on our stealth shield. We talked through some ideas about how we could change our sensors to try and detect another stealth ship. Seena created the sensors to do that and that icon...” She pointed at the three orange icons, “...is the icon that represents a stealth ship.”

Lothan muttered, “Pirates again.”

Lath shook his head, “We don’t know that Lothan, we just know they are hiding
